    Awarded to a woman who works on behalf of women and children, demonstrates courage and effectiveness in her fight for human rights, and resides or originates in the specific region of the crisis.
    Monetary award: $10,000

    Awarded to individuals or who represent the media, in one of eight categories, who have contributed to the awareness and exposure of human rights violations. Honored at an annual gala.

    Asian Human Rights Award


    Awarded to organizations (NGOs) or individuals who have conducted great meritorious service toward solving human rights problems or toward improving the human rights situation in Asia.

    The Citizen Activist Award


    Awarded to a citizen who has challenged injustice in the United States and made a difference in civil rights.
    Monetary award: $100,000

    The International Activist Award


    Awarded to a human rights activist outside of the United States who displays courage, conviction, and tenacity to bring justice in the international community.

    The Michael Scherner Activist Award


    Awarded to five full-time undergraduate college students who have battled any social or political oppression - such as sexism, racism, homophobia, and various other forms of injustice.

    Hellman/Hammett Award


    Awarded to writers in the world who had been victims of political persecution and are in financial need. In addition to providing much needed financial assistance, the Hellman/Hammett grants focus attention on repression of free speech and censorship by publicizing the persecution endured by the grant recipients.

    The John Humphrey Freedom Award


    Awarded to a non-governmental organization or individual for exceptional contributions to promote and defend human rights and democracy. Preference is given to those who are working under difficult circumstances in reference to political and legal institutions. The person or organization must not be affiliated with any political party.

    Netherlands Democracy and Human Rights Award

    Given to individuals and institutions who strive for the establishment and preservation of democracy and against dictatorship, discrimination and racism. in memory of 18 members of the Geuzen Dutch resistance group who were shot by German occupation forces at The Hague on 13 March 1941.

    Ramon Magsaysay Award


    Awarded to individuals and organizations in Asia whose civic contributions and leadership "exemplify the greatness of spirit, integrity, and devotion to freedom of Ramon Magsaysay," former president of the Philippines who died tragically in an airplane crash.
